  Governors

What does a Governor do?

Being a school governor can be one of the most rewarding ways of contributing to your local community. As a school governor, you have real opportunities to:
  • Raise educational standards in your local school
  • Help children achieve their full potential
  • Identify and develop the school’s management team
  • Identify where the school can improve and help make it happen
  • Improve the school’s financial efficiency and effectiveness
  • Engage parents and the local community to benefit the school
  • Develop an environment which promotes learning
  • Acquire new skills, new friends and a real sense of achievement
  • Share in and celebrate the success of children, staff, teachers and the school as a whole.

How does it work?

The governing body of a school is a formal, legal entity which has certain areas of responsibility. The whole governing body delivers these responsibilities collectively through the action of the governing body as a whole, Committees (smaller groups of governors which focus on particular areas) and occasionally individual governors. The organisation of each governing body will be slightly different but in general;

  • Full governing body – will meet once each term and discuss issues affecting the school as a whole. Generally the full governing body will hear reports from committees on their individual areas of responsibility.

Who Qualifies?

You do not need to have children at any school in order to become a school governor. In fact one of the keys to successful governing bodies is having governors with a variety of backgrounds and experience.

With certain exceptions relating to individuals who have been adjudged bankrupt, disqualified as company directors or charity trustees or whose employment is prohibited, anyone who is 18 or over can become a school governor. What is most important is the desire to contribute, the willingness to learn, the ability to be part of a team and the time to do an effective job
