| SEAHAM HARBOUR MEMORIES.
by MARY ROBINSON. My memories are so very much instilled of over half a century ago. I can still smell the air of Seaham coastline sea and rocks. Waiting for my husbands ship to enter harbour. A small port in 1949, yet to me a friendly place of people, and a community one can say was noticed by any seafarer. My husband made many friends with families of local men who sailed along the North East coast travelling to many destinations while in the Merchant Navy. We were young and life was there before us. Fate is in the hand of the unknown. Years passed by, My husband left the M. Navy after a long service. Returning to a shore job. This be being until he took ill. After many medical appointments he was entered into Seaham Hall to be cared for and given treatment. As I travelled to visit him at the Hall I was torn between his illness, and those times of his seafaring days. Passing along the coastline even its rugged beauty gave me a feeling of sadness. Praying silently he would be well soon. Walking towards the Hall entrance, I beheld the surrounding area and wonderful architecture against the skyline. Indoors was a sweeping staircase leading to upper wards. History tells me Byron the Poet was a frequent visitor to such. His love and life were there within its residence. Many stories relate to this era. My husband recovered and returned to stay
with me a little longer. So yes - I close my eyes - and relive a memory
of long ago, giving me a warm glow of times we both held fondly of Seaham
Harbour.
