Dawdon Colliery Banner

Dawdon Miners Lodge Banner

Located to the south of Seaham Harbour, Dawdon Colliery was set atop the chalky cliffs at Noses point at the very edge of the sea. Commercial production began in 1907 and was to last until 1991. The loss of the pit was greatly mourned in Seaham. Many felt that the closure was premature but more than this, it brought a realisation that the end of coal mining in Seaham was in sight after 160 years.
