The Mill Inn, Seaham, Co. Durham

The Mill Inn has an interesting history. It was here, following an enquiry into a major explosion at Seaham Colliery in 1852, that the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineering was born. The same Mill Inn was also the scene of a seige during the Parliamentary Election campaign of 1874, when the landlord held off an angry mob for two hours. The seige is described in some detail by John McCutcheon in his book "Troubled Seams" (County Durham Books-Reprinted 1994)
