Murton Miners Lodge Banner
Murton Village is close to and within the postal area of Seaham. The village developed around Murton Colliery which opened in 1830. Situated some 2.5 miles inland from the coast, it was the oldest of the four collieries in the Seaham area. Murton Colliery closed in 1992 just prior to the closure of Vane Tempest Colliery. At its height Murton Colliery employed some 1500 miners.
