MINING HERITAGE PROJECT - OCTOBER 2004 |
|
|
|
This
picture shows a group of us with our teachers looking more closely at the miner pushing the tub. It looks very heavy and we were told that this was the actual size of the tub. It moved on railway lines. Poor old Grandda. |
There
were other statues too. This one is of a tub full of coal. No wonder they needed pit ponies to pull the tubs out and into the mine. Most of the children have gas fires at home and haven't seen coal burning in the hearth. |

There
were some very old tubs which did not have any sides. They also ran on rails and were used many years ago to carry wooden props. The props were used to support the ceiling in the pit to prevent it from collapsing. |
This
show a similar old-style tub which was also used for carrying baskets of coal to the pit shaft where it would be taken to the surface. |

Before
we left Mr Dave Hopper who is the Chairman of the Durham Area NUM very kindly presented us with a real miners lamp. |
This
is another picture of the presentation. We were all very pleased with
this gift and really enjoyed the day. The lamp will go into our school Mining Museum. |
