MINING HERITAGE PROJECT - OCTOBER 2004 |
|
Redhill,
Durham City is the HQ of Durham Area NUM.
The visit by the children of Parkside Infant School together with teachers and members of the SDVT Miners Banner Fund took place on Tuesday 5th October 2004. |

There are many old miners
banners at Redhill.
They are there for safe keeping. Each banner tells its own story about the colliery it came from. |
There are also a lot of
interesting paintings about mining. This one is about carrying banners into Durham at the Durham Miners Gala. It made us proud that we had carried our own banner into Durham at this year's Gala. |

We were lucky enough to be allowed into main meeting
room. This is where miners delegates from all over County Durham would come together to discuss. |
The seats and walls were made of polished wood
which made us feel very important when we sat in the seats where the miners had sat to make important decisions. |

Some of those miners might have been our grandfathers or great grandfathers. Some of us could only just see over the top of the seats. The hall was quite dark. |
Then we went out into the sunshine. The gardens
of Redhill have trees and lawns but best of all they have some large mining statues. This one shows a miner underground. Steel girders hold up the coal walls and ceiling. The miner is pushing a tub with his back. It was hard, dirty work. |
