OCTOBER 2004

Tuesday, 5th October 2004 - Visit to Durham NUM HQ, Red Hill, Durham
It was a beautiful in Durham City when the children of Parkside Infant School visited th historic Durham Miners HQ  at Red Hill.  No one knew quite what to expect except that a warm welcome had been promised.

The visit turned out to be an amazing experience for the children.  Red Hill is saturated  with Durham Mining history.  It was here that many important issues were discussed and decision made which  determined the direction of mining in County Durham.  The children were able to take there places in the chamber where many important debates took place.  They saw banners and other mining memorabilia which are kept here.  They learned about mining disasters and saw sculpures in honour of Durham's miners.  They day will never be forgotten.  It will specially be remembered through the miners lamp which was presented to the children by Durham NUM Chairman, Dave Hopper.

Friday, 29th October 2004 -  Textile Restoration Studios, Altrincham
It was a long journey to Altrincham from Seaham through torrential rain but there was a warm welcome waiting at the Textile Restoration Studios.  The visit was well worthwhile.  The children learned a lot about the materials which banners were made from, how they might be damaged by mis-use and how repairing them was difficult but often possible.
