The Seaham Neighbourhood Football Story
Final of First Tournament
Programme - Page 4
3. The Tournament
The Tournament took
more than three months intensive organisation before the first game kicked
off on April 25th, 1977. For the Tournament Seaham had been split into
fourteen areas in such a way as to minimise the chances of what were essentially
school teams being entered. It was organised on a similar basis to the
World Cup Finals so that the teams were divided into four groups. The teams
in each group played against one another and the top two teams in each
group progressed to the quarter final stage. The quarter, semi final and
final matches were arranged on a straight knock-out basis.
For the occasions of
the Semi Final and Final matches at Dawdon C.W. Ground the pitch has been
marked out for Junior School football and the goalposts have been specially
constructed at the expense of the Dawdon Miners Welfare Committee.
The match ball for
the Final was donated by Dawdon C.W. Juniors and as a gesture of our appreciation
to the Junior Schools in Seaham it will be presented to the Seaham Junior
Boys football organisation after the Final
4. In Another Twenty
Five Years . . .
The story began by
saying that the seeds of the Seaham Neighbourhood Silver Jubilee Football
Tournament were sown just twenty five years ago. We hope that it has provided
the 260 children who have taken part with memories they will cherish all
their lives. Perhaps in twenty five years time one of them will look at
the football medallion, with which each boy who took part will be presented,
and decide that perhaps it is his generation's turn to do something for
those children of tomorrow.
Meanwhile, after the
marvelous response to this Tournament, the Committee hope to organise similar
Neighbourhood Tournaments on an annual basis. So watch out for Seaham Neighbourhood
Football next year.
