Hi, Great site! My father came from Seaham and went to Carlisle to
work in the thirties. His name was Pemberton. Does anyone remember the Pembertons?
There were three brothers Stanley (my dad), Sidney and Walter, and two sisters
Lily and Ada but I don't know much more about them. Would love to hear from
anyone with any information. Cheers

Hello.I am trying to trace my roots as far as I can. If anyone has
any information I would be very grateful. My grandmother was Alice Lawrence
and she married William Rhodes who, I believe, was a miner at Easington Colliery.
They lived in Horden. My great grandmother, ? Lawrence, died on the day of
my birth - 10/3/53. I know my great grandmother had two daughter s - Alice
and Annie and a number of sons who apparently all died. Some of these during
WW1. I am keen to find any information about my family and would appreciate
an email.

Hi, I was reminiscing and thought I'd see what came up when I typed
in my old stomping grounds. I lived in Dawdon at the old Mace store (26 Fox
Street) until 1969. I loved Guy Fawkes night when we lit the huge bonfire
in the vacant lot across the road, pity about the overhead wires though.
Love to share memories with you mine are rather fragmented now. Best wishes

What a great idea! I have suddenly lit on an interest in Seaham and
the connection is not cola, but coal. I live in Wisbech, an inland port
in the north of Cambridgeshire. I am interested in the coastwise trade into
and out of Wisbech in the period between 1820 and 1850. Wisbech was the second
largets grain market in England at that time and she often sent grain out
and brought back coal, some of it coal from Seaham. In the absence of local
records, I want to find out just what volume of trade the re was between
Seaham and Wisbech 1820 t0 1850 and, in particular, when Seaham began to
send coal to Wisbech and how much it sent. Can any local records expert help
me? My warmest regards and best wishes for the resurrection of Seaham. We
have a similar problem, incidentally, in Wisbech. Valentine Bolam Octavia

I am a third generation Seaham Harbor off-shoot. My mom was born and
raised as Gwendoline Wiltshire in Seaham. She has two living sisters and
numerous neices and nephews still residing there. In fact, five of them came
to visit all of us here in USA in May of this year. What a wonderful reunion.
You might know Gweneth and Barry Morton or Alfreda and Hughie Scol len right
there in Seaham. It has been 34 years since I was in England. Hope to return
someday with my husband and two sons. My mom lives here in El Dorado too,
and I am so excited to be able to have her over so she can visit the website.

Further to my earlier comment, and having read all the others, I can
confirm that PC ArthurLockyer dispensed summary justice to many a Seaham
kid in a manner which was usually deserved and always effective!!It would
be very NON-PC today, but then look at the results! Arthur had enormous respect.
He road a Velocette motorbike which virtually disappeared under his huge
frame, and he knew every potential deliquent in the area. I was once caught
stealing apples from an orchard behind Rock House and got a c lip around
the ear for my trouble!!You would have to wonder how much we have progressed
when the liberals allow young people to get away with what they do today. It
didn't happen in Arthurs day!

no replies and this may be accounted for by an error in my Email address.

Hello! My grandmother, Hannah Nevill/Nevilles was born in Seaham in
1855, the daughter of John and Hannah (Roxby) NEVILLES. In the 1881 census
in April, she was living with her parents along with her three children.
On May 7 of that year she landed in the port of Philadelphia, PA, USA, her
husband, William GRAHAM having preceeded her. They eventually ended up in
Iowa. John and Hannah (Roxby) Nevilles are buried in the church yard of Holy
Trinity parish in MURTON. She died in 1887 and he in 1894. Looking for any
descendents or connections with these folks. I hope to travel to the Seaham
area this fall. Would like to find a B & B to stay in for several days
while I research in the area. Needs to be walking distance to the bus line
as I do not intend to rent an automobile. Joyce Brown jebrown@ecity.net USA

early 80's and I contacted him in the hospital. When I phoned later that
week I discovered that he had been released. Unfortunatly, no one was able

Hello, I am a History student at the University of Northern British
Columbia in Canada and I am looking for help and/or advice with a personal
undertaking. I am particularly interested in the Cariboo Gold Rush which
took place here during the 1860s. This rush started in 1859 and lasted for
about ten years, although gold extraction in this area has never really stopped.
During the period of the rush people from all over the world came here to
make their fortunes and the only link they had with home and family was
letters. At the height of the rush there were over ten thousand people in
the area of the town now known as Barkerville. The number of letters sent
home by these people should have been quite large and may have included photographs.
It is my hope that some of them survived. While I am also searching the institutions
where one would normally expect to find such things, I am particularly looking
for the "undiscovered" . By way of experimentation, I am trying to use the
web to find documents which could be used to fill gaps in our knowlege of
local history. To do this I am contacting historical, heritage, and genealogical
societies, or anyone who has knowlege or an interest in history. It should
be noted here that it is not necessary to actually obtain the documents
or photos. I want to learn of their existence and if possible arrange for
copies of them. If you can think of any organization or person who might
be able to help, would you please forward this to them. Any suggestions
as to how to proceed would be appreciated. Some possible keywords would
be: Barkerville, Camerontown, Richfield, Antler, Quesnel, Victoria, Judge
Begbie, Williams Creek, Cariboo, Fraser River Thank you very much. Ernie

Like everyone from Seaham or who has links to Seaham's past, I was
delighted to find your web site. The format of the site is very intuitive
and the background and graphics used are excellent. Thanks for putting Seaham
on the world map, it is a great town and even though I now live in North
Carolina and am married to a native "Southern" girl, I still get a kick when
I visit the old town and see the many friends and family I have there. Like
another of your guests, I also attended Seaham Grammer School between 19965-1972
and would love to hear from other pupils from the class of '72 to see how
they are doing. Having been born in Seaham in 1954, I have seen many changes
take place, both commercially and architecturally but the one thing that
has remained consistent is the friendly nature of the people. My family tree
on my father's side is Green and they lived in Dawdon. My mother's side of
the tree was Jubb and they lived in Deneside. Both families found employment
in the various collieries of Seaham, particularly Dawdon but my father, Dick,
"bucked" the trend and became a joiner for Seaham and the Easington councils.
He was the baby of a family 6 and sadly, he passed away last year. M y mother,
Peggy, worked at Brian Mills, later Littlewoods in Hendon, and she continues
to be as active as a spring chicken, resorting to line dancing twice a week.
I often kid with her that she would look great in a cowgirl hat with boots
to match, very s imilar to some of the dress attire I see in this area of
the USA. Anyway, enough of my ramblings, I guess work beckons, but once
again, congratulations in taking Seaham into the 21st century. Keep up the
good work on the web site. More history and anecdotes, please.

grandparents Walter Cullingford and Mary Elizabeth Rutherford Cullingford
were buried in USA at Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. They supposedly buried 5 of
my mothers siblings at Seaham. It was after that (1903) when Walter came
to the US and 1905 when Mary Elizabeth sailed to America on the SS Marion
from Liverpool.Mary Elizabeth had a brother Tom Rutherford who was a member
of the House of Commons I am told. Must go now. Any information is appreciated.
Very interesting site on the web.

Last time I signed your book (some 12 months ago) I enquired aboutthe
name of the sailing ship sailing over the bar. I have a very early recollection
of a German sailtraining ship entering Seaham in mid-thirties. The ship was
named `Werner Wien' (or so mething like that). I asked then for confirmation
from a Seaham archivist but received no reply. Any takers, please? Your Guest
List grows...never knew there were so many Seaham people about! Good luck!

My father, William McGauchie came from Seaham. He worked at the Dawdon
colliery. His father was Robert McGauchie who was a tailor. His mother was
Ann Thirwell. All of the family left the town in the thirties because there
was no work. My auntes na mes are Mary, Kathleen, and Jess. My uncle John
was killed in the war, but sadly is not included on your War Memorial. We
found Seaham a warm and friendly place when we visited. I hope you can make
the town come alive with new industry, but the spirit of the town will never
be beaten.

I have just found this web site and so far think it is great. My dad's
family is originally from Seaham (The Cooper Family lived on the cliffs
of the north battery until 1942). I have spent many childhood holiday's
in Seaham and still enjoy visiting to day as we still have family there
(Hello uncle Charlie and Auntie Lil, Cousins Joan and Maurice!) Through
this site - I have also learned the EMAIL address of a long lost second Cousin
- Leslie Roberts who now lives in Phoenix, Arizona. I will be in tou ch soon.
Well done on a great site !

I just found Seaham Harbour On-Line and don't believe it - it's great!
Have been looking at the familiar names and places that other people have
written about. I left in 1965 and emigrated to the U.S. but the rest of
my family is still in England, no ne still in Seaham though. We moved from
Albert Street to Westlea in 1956. My parents Marjory and Peter, three sisters
who all went to Ropery Walk and Seaham Harbour Girls' Grammar School! If
anyone remembers my family, my mom is going to be eighty in Ju ly and would
love to hear from any of their old gang. She lives down south now, but I'll
pass on any messages when I come for the birthday party!

who were married on Feb 11, 1879, emigrating to America in 1903, my grandparents

if there would be records of their burial thereabouts. Deaths would have been
between 1882 and 1902 or so. Thanks for any help.

Brilliant Web Site! I was born in Seaham of a large family. In fact
my brother Charlie and Sister Lillian still live there. For may years the
Cooper family lived in North Battery on the cliffs. We left in 1942 when
the cliffs were eroding. Some of the family have now gone but there are plenty
of us left scattered around the country and the world. Seaham is being reborn
and in five years it will be a prettier place much as it was before coal
came. Keep growing Seaham!

I typed in my place of birth just to see if Seaham or anyone from there
was on the Internet. Wow! What a shock! I haven't looked at much yet but
what I've seen really looks great. I emigrated to Canada in 1961 at the age
of 15 with me Mam and Step Dad Alf Burton. My own father was Gordon Deighton
who passed away when I was 13, My Grandparents, on my mother's side, were
Elliott's William (Willie) and Polly and we all lived in Dawdon. They were
on School Street and we were at 25 Longnewton Street. I went to Dawdon Junior
School and then to Seaham Modern Secondary School. We attended St. Hild
and St. Helens Church and I went to their Cub pack and Scout Troop. My Uncle
Bill Elliott lives Middle Herrington, Sunderland but he used to live in Seaham.
I have more happy memories to submit, but this will have to do for now as
my server keeps kicking me out. It must be a busy night. It would be great
hearing from anyone who is still related or who remembers after all these
years as I haven't been back since 1963 Elliott Deighton elliottd@orbonline.net

Hi anyone, As I said I am new to this game, and just discovered Seaham
via my uncle (who is a foreigner - comes from Yorkshire) - I'm from Seaham
and most of my family still lives there. Family surnames are Wright (Dad
Tommy is famous at the Navy Club and other watering holes around town), Wallaces
(believe cousin Freddie is a computer buff, so if you are tuned in Freddie
- great, send me a message back, Uncle John will keep it for me), Simpsons
- especially Molly and Anty - on the distaff side - it was Kelly and there
are thousands of those, but some may remember Mary Kelly (now Tortolano)
from Ash Crescent, Parkside. It's hard to know what to say, when you have
an open line. Don't want to bore anyone, but a brief history - My name is
Maureen Wright, used to live in Ash Cres, Doctor Street (near the famous
Knak), Malvern Cres then at the top of the Avenue - behind the Mallard and
what is now a park. the trees in the park used to be in our back garden.
Mam's name is Betty (nee Kelly) Dad is Tommy, brothers John (also in Austrlia
now), David (the runner) Thomas and sister Carol. I went to St Cuthberts,
then St Joseph's, joined the Army at 17 came out at 21 the worked at the
Dole Office in Seaham, where my brother David is now the Manager. I would
like to hear from anyone who knew me or the family in Seaham - especially
cousin Freddie Wallace or a lady who was a good friend of mine, but with
whom I have lost touch used to be Gillian O'Connor (or her sister Margaret)
Until someone touches down - best of luck to Seaham. I hope you do well into
the future. Must say that on my two visits back to the town in the last 20
years, I have been more impressed with what I have seen than I ever was when
I lived there. Memories are fond, but I pleased you have come into the 21st
Century.

Found the site by accident and couldn't believe how many documents
to match Seaham that there were. We were last in Seaham in April 1994 visiting
with Corinne and John Green and his mother Olive Green and Son Russell. Olive
is around 70 years and told us the story of learning to swim at the pier.
We went to a brass band concert in Seaham conducted by a colourful gentleman.
John's father also worked down the Knak pit. We were told that it was to
shortly close. Is that the case? We wish that we could return to visit but
will have to settle with the site. Great work. Anyone seeing John or Corinne,
please say Hello.

Hi there, This is the first time I have replied to anyone via the internet.
I lived in Seaham from birth to 5 years and although I have now lost the
accent, I have very good memories of the town as I still visit today. Both
my grandfather (Thomas Parker) and uncle (Brian Parker) played for local
Cricket clubs and worked down in the mines. I believe things have changed
since then. As I now live down south there are things I miss such as stotty
cake ( probably spelt wrong) and Pork Dips. A must every time I visit. Its
great to see this site I hope it continues for many years to come. PS Hello
