Enjoyed looking at this site. I am interested in the Seaham mine explosion in 1880 as my great-great grandfather, John Vickers, was killed in there. I understand there is a memorial to those men killed in the explosion in Seaham somewhere. Could anyone tell me the whereabouts? Also, does anyone have any information about John Vickers/the explosion. Many thanks.

Hello Seaham, I feel bad for having to ask for maps again. My computer crashed on me and I lost all my files. I'm looking for one from 1895 that was sent to me by one of the following persons John Cuttermole, Robert or Angela Hunter Richard Thorpe, or Ed Mason. This time I will download it onto a disk. I appreciated all the help from before and the same goes for now too. Thanks Kenny Koziar

Hello.Renewing an earlier message.I am trying to trace my roots as far as I can. If anyone has any information I would be very grateful. My grandmother was Alice Lawrence and she married William Rhodes who, I believe, was a miner at Easington Colliery. They lived in Horden. My great grandmother, ? Lawrence, died on the day of my birth - 10/3/53. I know my great grandmother had two daughter s - Alice and Annie and a number of sons who apparently all died. Some of these during WW1. I am keen to find any information about my family and would appreciate an email. Steve McCafferty

We have just completed the virtual, coastal walk along the the seafront of Seaham Harbour. We were very interested in the history of the place we were born and bred. Also, we have visited the Millennium Record Book, and found the entry from Herb and Julie Brookes, from Pennsylvania. We read with great interest, as they are my Dad's sister and her husband!!! It's a small world!!!!

Lots of great improvements since I last visited the site. I"m visiting in March and looking forward to seeing the sculptures that have sparked all the debate! And thanks to the guestbook I"ve tracked down another old school friend so thank you. See you all in March I"ve got my fingers crossed for slightly warmer weather, as I get the flu every year after my visit.

Don't know what the people of Seaham think of their sculptures but I think they are dreadful - a great example of civic art in Britain! Whoever these people are ( the instigators) all you can be sure of is that they will get it completely wrong. These things are monstrosities - just like the the angel of the north.

Wow.. Seaham finally on the web. I lived at 176 The Avenue, Deneside during the late 70's, early 80's and went to school at Seaham Harbour Junior School (under Mr Mullany), and then Seaham Comprehensive. I did my degree at Sunderland Poly, and left the area then, although I still have relatives in the North East. Hope everyone had a great new year... Dave.

My name is David Briggs. I was born in a flat on Station Road (1959). As was my brother, Paul (1960) and my Sister, Carole (1963). Our family immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1966, when I was 7 years old. My mother's name is Joyce (nee Waters). My father's name is Raymond Briggs. I am currently living in Nova Scotia,Canada. My maternal grandparents (John and Emily Waters) lived at 30 Ranksborough Steet. From their front steps you could see the "pits" beyond the railroad tracks. The last time I was in Seaham was in 1981, while my grandparents were still alive. I have fond memories of "going to the shops" with my nana and granda. My mother has a brother Jack (John) Waters who married Elsie Drinkwater. I have children of my own and plan to visit Seaham Harbour and County Durham with them and my wife Catherine.

Hello Seaham, I am interested in my family tree, however, I've only just started. My granfather and Grandmother were William and Ethel Alder and lived in your area until my dad (Richard) was 3, he's 67ish now. I Know I still have a great aunt or 2 living in Seaham, although they will be in their 90s and probably wont remember me. I last visited in the early 70s. If anyone of the Alders looks in, please contact me on e-mail. It would be really good to hear from any of you. Dawn.

Check out the new Chat Room and Millenium Record Book at http://www.seaham.com/Chat/chatfrnt.html Let us know what times would be good to advertise online meetings and also what topics you'd like to see agendaed. We have arranged a meeting for Friday 17th December at 6pm GMT but this probably won't suit everyone particularly in Oz.

best wishes to all in seaham for the new year and festive season. i am praying that enough people buy john lennons record "imagine"or we will have to suffer the misfortune of that professional christian cliff richard being top of the charts for the new millenium and we wont hear the last of it. Hi, I am trying to find information on my grandfather ADAM ROBINSON who was born in Seaham Harbor on May 5, 1895. He was a coal miner (what a suprise) and stared working in the mines in 1909+/- when he was 14. His dad was William Robinson and his mot her was Mary Ann Spurr. He and his parents moved to Coalhurst, Alberta, Canada in 1911+/-. He was with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I after 1916. If you have any information on ADAM ROBINSON, WILLIAM ROBINSON or MARY ANN SPURR I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. Bye.

As one of the misfortunate people who will be actually working on the millenium eve, I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank all the other emergencey service personnel who will be missing out on the celebrations, because nobody else will. However as I will be visiting the first week of January 2000 there may be a few upset wives and girlfriends as i will be on the piss with their other halfs. [I hope] I'm a Firefighter by the way,and work in one of the most deprived parts of inner city London. It can be a most interesting occupation.

Hello.I am trying to trace my roots as far as I can.

Hello Seaham,I would like to give you all a great BIG thanks to all the people who responed to my request for a map of Seaham. I though that if I had just gotten one reply that I would be lucky, but I got five very nice people(John,Glen,Richard,& Rober t7 Angela) who were just fantastic and most helpful to me. I really do appreciate all the help. If I ever come to England, Seaham will be the very first place that I visit. I've gotten some maps scanned to me that are just what I needed and the address of the city council for any additional help. My great great grandparents left Seaham 118 years ago and I'm so glad to have found that they came from such a wonderful little town. I guess thet next step is to find out if there are any living descendents of t heir parents whom I may be related to. But I will post that letter at another day. Again thanks to all who helped me. Many Kind regards Kenny Koziar

I had the opportunity to write in the guest book this past Sunday, and to give a small summary of myself. Though if anyone remembers me, please go ahead and e mail me. My name is Jacqueline Markie, I grew up in Seaham and lived at Viceroy Street in th e Harbor. I attended Ropery Walk school from 1974 -1980, then I attended Seaham Comprehensive school from 1980 - 1985. My life in Seaham was not the greatest. Many people in my year at school picked at me and made fun of me. I was the last person anyon e ever expected to be successful at my future. Well, all of you people, lesley Waller, Jacqueline Green, Lisa Robinson, Kimberely Dobson, Susan Beacon, Neil Gibbson, John Armes, Michael Armes,Oh gosh, and many, many more including few teachers - do I hav e news for you! Success is sweet revenge! I beat the odds as a foster child, and I made it! I have succeeded in life in every way, shape and form. You can read my summary in my previous note to the guest book. Now it is "I" who helps and counsels a few of the girls I still keep in touch with - the very same one's who use to put me down. I would love to meet with you all and now be at peace and to teach you how to also embrace your life, to live in love, kindness and compassion for all. Do email me, if anyo ne remembers me, I would be happy to respond to you with kindness. Jkmmarkie.

Anyway, as I was about to say, before I accidently hit the send key of my previous comments.... I have found it rather interesting to see and to actually remember quite a few people who have signed the guest book. I have not lived in Seaham for 12 year s now. I worked briefly in Switzerland, then for four yeard in Germany and I have since 1991 lived in America. For the past 11 years of my career, I have worked mostly with children, either in a "ministry' setting, or in a formal "nanny' setting. I atten ded University in America, in Pennsylvania, Virginia and I took a few classes in Texas. I am currently working with the Catholic Church at the Women's Cris Center for Pregnant women. I am of course, without a doubt - Pro-Life! Our lives are a gift from G od, and no-one should be killing children. I also work with children, and I am also a member of the International Junior Chambers of Commerce. The organization helps to raise money for many charitable benefits. I enjoy my life very much. The single life , at almost 31 years old, is really not too bad. I keep very busy with work, volunteer work and interests. I am not sure when I will ever be back to Seaham to visit - I beleive I have become too Americanized! even tot he way I speak and spell!! and certa inly my out spoken opinion! However, with my strong faith, as I have always had, I am still a traditional, conservative, reserved young woman - and I thank God each day for the graces of love, and compassionate he has given to me and for my beautiful lif e. Someone please write, I will be happy to respond!

I see a lot of people from USA, Australia etc trying to trace their ancesters in Seaham. May I suggest they get hold of the newly released CD's of the 1881 Census. This has been put on disc by the local history societies and the Mormons. I posted a message about my memories of Seaham some months ago, but had no response, so I'm trying again. Does anyone remember my aunts and uncles, Bob and Mary Watt, and Hannah and Ned Summerbell, and their children Anne and Eddie? Uncle Bob lived in Nelson Street until about 1960, and Uncle Ned lived in Stanley Street. I used to stay with Bob and Mary during school holidays, (I lived in Sunderland)and my sister Pauline stayed with Auntie Hannah. Pauline was quite friendly with a girl called Sadie Bee r, and I've seen a Sadie mentioned a few times on the website, it's an uncommon name, could it be the same one? If anyone out there knows, I'd be interested to find out. I'm coming up to Sunderland next week and hope to pop along to Seaham to have a look at all the recent changes. My Dad went there recently, to the Carnival or something, and he was very impressed. He used to live in Seaham, but before the war, in Sepastopol Terrace, and he worked at a grocers shop. I like the Seaham website - I check on i t every weekend, just after I've looked up the Sunderlan Echo.

Aye well this visit hasn't half brought back a lot of happy memories. My little sister Glenda put me on to this wonderful web site idea you lot in the old town have had. Left Seaham when I was 16 for the bright southern lights in 1967. Attended Ropery Walk primary when it was there and Camden Square secondary. Air Force,Middle East contracting and now here in Scotland. Great life hillwalking, cycling. Hi to all you folks, especially Bill Foster and Joe Salt all of us rougues at large in the early days! Near the 50 year point now lads! Any relatives of them out there? Fantastic opportunity to at last be in touch with my childhood town. Thanks.Andy G.

Hi! Can't believe I fell upon (by accident) a web site on Seaham. What a pleasure!! Left Seaham in the '60s with my family - Bob and Helen Gulliver (Mum & Dad), Andrew (brother) and Christine (sister) lived in Wolverhampton and then moved on. Great to read all about Seaham again. Still have Gulliver family living in the town and visited last year. Hi everyone. Anyone remember Ropery Walk Primary School? I lived in Denehouse Road. Anyone know of Carol Huntley? Long lost friend!! Will pass on web site address to my family who will love visiting! Bye for now - Glenda Gulliver-Begg

I am trying to gather information on my Family Tree. Everyone tells me not to shake it to much, you never know what or who could fall out of it. Well that's alright, I like the strange and weird, but mostly I like the unuseable. Anyway, the names I'm searching for are Grantham and Collins. I have a Thomas Grantham that was born in N.C. in 1740, Yes I know yal had a Baron of that name around the same time. But I'm sure he was not Baron material, or why else move across the water and away from everyone? And the Collins I'm looking for is a Shadrick Collins, from what I understand, he was knighted before he left England. I hope that helps anyone willing to help me. Thankyou very much, Dana G. Collins

Hello Ed, Just a note to say I have checked out the timeline site and the dig99. It is really neat to see all of the changes. I just wish I had my husband and two sons over there with me so we could watch in person. Those of you who live in Seaham h ave so much history. I was just 15 years old when I spent the summer in Seaham; 1964 to be exact. I know I would find things changed a lot, but it is still a unique area. My cousin, Gweneth Ashett Morton, and husband Barry, son BJ, just spent three wee ks with us here in America. They traveled home yesterday, Aug. 29. We were laughing about our trips to the Westlea Club and how we spoofed the door man into thinking we were old enough to go in( and we did). Have some really good memories of Seaham. < /b>

The "cobbler poet" Joseph Blacket died on the Seaham Hall estate in 1810 and is buried in the churchyard. He was visiting his brother and law, John Dixon, gamekeeper for Sir Ralph Milbanke. Many thanks to Ed and Sadie Mason for their pictures of the 1998 Miners' Gala. Their account and pics of the banners brought tears to my eyes, as I used to live on North Road in Durham, between the Viaduct and the Bus Station. Each Big Meeting I would be awakened by the first band coming down from the Railway Station behind our house. From the front garden I would watch the parade, which took half the day, go past, with banners held proudly high, bands playing enthusiastically all kinds of music, and the lads and lasses dancing their way down the barricaded street. All the shop windows had to be boarded up to prevent the crush of people pushing them in! My, it was a grand day! How sad to think there are no more pits, but lovely to hear that the Gala is still well attended. How I would love to see it again. I came across your page in a search I did for "Miners Gala", I'm afraid not much else came up. Are their any other sites you can point me to? About the Gala or any other events in Durham. My relatives there are not "into" computers. Tara for noo, TWJ (formerly Billy Jackson).

We've just added some pages to the site showing the new sculptures on the seafront. There's still more work to do and some of the pictures will be replaced with better one's as soon as possible. The address is: http://www.seaham.com/heritage/timeline/ Let us know what else would be useful and whether or not some of the explanations make the sculptures better value for money OR NOT.

dear mr. mason, thank you for your reply to my comments regarding seaham town council`s expenditure. the reason i raised this issue, one i am fourteen years of age and have a keen interest in the area where i live and although i was not aware who was responsible for these particular projects i personally cannot find a just reason for the expense incurred. i am proud of seaham and would appreciate any project which would improve seaham`s surroundings. there are so many facilities fall short for peoples needs in our area even something like a lamenating facility or more recreation for 11-15 year olds i am lucky i have a computer and access to the internet whereas so many do not. i know fuding is limited but do feel the y outh of today have no voice or very little inclusion in projects in our area i would appreciate your reply thank you. P.S what is the future for seaham vane tempest site? ant5@eidosnet.co.uk

It seems to me that regardless of the artistic merits of the latest additions to grace Seaham's seafront, someone should have had the foresight to take a look at just where the Vane Tempest sculpture was going to be placed. Hiding the work behind a rather substantial crash barrier seems perverse in the extreme. Now the Council are saying that access in going to be created, and that in any case, the sculpture is probably going to be re-located anyway! With reference to Tom's comments on the Hall car park scrap heap...I think the creator of the "piece of art" may have chopped a lump off the angel of the north and disgarded it in poor Seaham

The steel monoliths on the sea front do nothing to enhance the area. It would seem as if Seaham in trying to go one better that Gateshead and, the Angel of the North. The only good thing about them is that, they are on the road to the funny farm at Ryh ope. Hope you and, yours are well. Tom

I've just found the site and would just like to say what a real treat it was. It did however, also make me feel quite homesick. I left Seaham in 1978 to join the RAF, having attended Camden Square school, 71-76. At present I'm sat in the middle of the desert protecting Kuwait and the free world from Saddam Hussain! Fortunately my parents, Jack and Hilda Harris still live in the town so I'm able to get home once or twice a year. As I'm based just outside London its good to be able to get some decent beer at sensible prices! So keep up the good work, and you can all rest easy in your beds or the 'club' knowing I'm out here protecting you.

Hello.I am trying to trace my roots as far as I can.

This is a revisit to your Guestbook and I see it's still thriving. Born in Seaham in 1926, I wonder if there are any contemporary `would be' correspondents. I haven't lived in Seaham since shortly after WW II, so that dates me! I did very briefly visit in 1987 (about 3 hours only) and was impressed with the new look. Where Vane Tempest stood...only a green field. St Mary's visible through the trees from the Coast road. My parents were married there. Here are a few names from my era to juggle with...Nicholson (the distaff side of my family), Jennings (school teacher SIS), Ford (uncle), Claxton (brother-in-law), Cunningham (Margaret...a contemporary), Turnbull (uncle). Any cross-matches?...send me an e-mail. Best wishes...Brian Rowell

Hi...I added to your guest book a few days ago, but so far it hasn't been posted and I'm wondering if it got lost in cyberspace somewhere. I'm new at genealogy and looking up my family in Seaham, the ROBSONS, who used to live on Nelson Street, I believe it was. Hello everyone in Seaham. I currently live in Seaham and have done all my life. I wouldn't like to move because it's God's country. I attended the SIS between 1973-1978. I live on a housing estate which used to be where the school field was. My house is about where the sandpit used to be. We had the best football team in the area 1977-78 and just about won all trophy's (Barry Sutherland and RAOB cups to name a few). Northlea (the Grammar) didn't like to get beat off us. Malcolm Slee and Bbob Walton were our Peter Reid and Bobby Saxton. Anyone remember these days ????/

Hello! I will be in Seaham Harbor Monday or Tuesday, June 7-8. Will be leaving here June 2. Will someone tell me the location of the library relative to the bus stop?? The reason for my visit is mainly family history research but I am also interested in seeing the area. Would someone be interested in taking me on a historical tour of the town? My grandmother, Hannah Nevilles, was born there in Dec. 1856. My 90 year old cousin remembers her talking wistfully of the sea. Here in Iowa, USA, the "sea" is expanses of corn, wheat, and soybeans. After she and her children joined her husband in the US in 1881, she never saw the real sea again, nor her parents, who are buried at Holy Trinity, Murton. I am intersted in talking with anyone who has Nevilles or Graham ancestry. Hannah married William Graham at Easington in 1873. I am looking forward to my visit. Joyce in Iowa USA

I remember sitting on my fathers shoulders, about 4 years old, when the then prince of wales(duke of windsor) visited seaham to lay a wreath on the cenotaph. The whole population must have turned out to see him on the terrace green. All i could see thou gh was the tops of their top silk hats because we were standing just beside the statue outside the Londonderry offices, and i was more frighteened that that was going to fall on top of me!!! i also remember standing in the back yard where i lived ( 1 Marl borough Street) waiting for the zepplin coming over, i rememner this great big black thing in the sky, a nd i was clinging on my mothers skirts terrified in case it fell from the sky.

I remember when we used to go to the Spiritualist Hall dances just before the war. On one occasion I decided to try the cyder which I hadn't tasted before. I had two glasses! I thought "Why it's just made from apples it must be ok.". But when I went ho me I was happier than usual. I got a good telling off and banned from going back. They eventually closed during the war when the air raid became a problem.

I left Robert Richardson Grammar School in Ryhope in June, 1964 and in the September was the first boy to enrol in the 6th. form at the newly opened Seaham Grammar Technical School. I was shortly followed by 5 others - Ray Wilson, Dave Chaytor, John Di nning, John Warburton and Willy Parkinson. There were 33 girls and us 6 in the Lower 6th. We spent the 2 most fabulous years at this school and left in July 1966 to go off to university etc. I gradually lost touch with most of my friends but after 33 years it would be great to meet up again. It's lovely to see a part of my heritage on the Internet. I was born and raised in Seaham. Maybe someone out there will remember me and my family. My dad is Douglas Anderson and my mam is Betty Anderson. I lived 15 years of my life on Cedar Crescent, went to school at Parkside Infants, Dawdon Junior,Camden Sq uare, Northlea and finally on to Peterlee Tech. I lived at 20 Cedar crescent, you may know some of my old neighbors, Jack Woods,Muriel and Tom Fenwick, Violet and Billy Willis,Dennis and Margaret Moore, anyone recognize this lot. My Grandparents lived do wn the Harbour on Henry Street (#2), and then on Viceroy Street (#10). There names are Susanna (DOLLY) Anderson and Benjamin (BENNY) Anderson. My dad worked and the Knack and at Dawdon Colliery I am guessing from 1969-1980. We emigrated to Canada in 1980. My brother is Neil Anderson and my sister is Joanne Anderson. ISN'T SEAHAM WONDERFUL! I LIVED IN SEAHAM FROM 1948 UNTIL I DESERTED THE OLD PLACE AND 'WENT SOUTH' FOR THREE YEARS TO GRANTHAM(LINCS), WHERE I STUDIED TEACHER TRAINING AND HAD PEOPLE MAKE FUN OF MY ACCENT. WE DIVN'T SPEAK FUNNY ,LIKE,MARRAS. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER MY DAD, ERNIE ROWELL, WHO WAS A JOINER AT 'THE KNACK' OR BILLY HUTCHINSON, A WELDER AT VANE TEMPEST PIT? INCIDENTALLY, MY GRAN DORA HUTCHINSON,OF 4, OLIVER STREET ONLY DIED THIS YEAR AGED 99YEARS 9MONTHS SHE USED TO BREED SCOTTISH TERRIERS..DOES ANYONE OUT THERE REMEMBER HER? LIKE NOBBY FROM NEW ZEALAND I REMEMBER ARTHUR LOCKYER,A FEARSOME MAN, BUT FAIR. I HAVE TOLD MANY TALES OF HIS VAST FRAME AND SMALL BIKE (HOW DID IT SUPPORT HIM?) I WELL REMEMBER THE DAY WHEN HE RODE PAST MY GRANDAD'S BANKHEAD FISHERIES AND RUSS, THE GUARD DOG , CHARGED OUT. ARTHUR PROMPTLY FELL OFF INTO ONE OF THE NUMEROUS PUDDLES.I RAN AWAY AND HID BEHIND THE AMBULANCE STATION AS I KNEW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I W AS IN CLIPPING RANGE.MY GRANDAD WAS VERY SUBDUED FOR MANY DAYS AFTERWARDS. I STILL GO BACK TO THE OLD PLACE BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM THE SAME WTHOUT THE PITS,CLEANER THOUGH. THE FEATHERBED ROCK HAS NEARLY GONE TOO!

Good morning town of Seaham. I am hoping that you can help me locate an old friend. I've tried to locate your directory to no avail. My friends name is Dave Adey. The last address I have for him is 3 Falmouth Close but that was 11 years ago. His wifes name is Gloria and I am unsure if they had children. I would love to contact them. My husband and I met Dave when he was over here working in 1988. Is there a way you could contact him and let him know that we are wanting to write a note his way. Your town looks lovely. I was born in Sunderland but was a regular at Dawdon where my nana and granda lived--Frank and Jenny Watt. He used to run the swimming pool at the pit there. Now I'm here in sunny California, just south of Los Angeles, and you can't get much differen t from Dawdon than this! I write fiction and constantly root my characters in the north-east of England, though I have to make them speak English! Sadly I lost my accent when we moved to Nottingham when I was about 7. Now, having lived all over the pla ce, I've no idea what I sound like, a hybrid. Some of you may know my cousin, Grahame Stokell, and his mam, Betty. Give them a kiss if you see them! Byee! Christine, aka Tinty. (No, that's not my Hollywood name, that's my real nickname from when I wa s a bairn and couldn't say "Christine.") P.S. If anybody knows of a nice house on the north-east coast, let me know. I'm coming back soon . . . to get my accent back.

All right, lads! Pleased to see you have got the technology I was pleasantly surprised. I'm living in Marbella but quite often come back to Seaham to see my family and mates. Everyone should remember me down at the Kickin' Cuddy, especially Cliff Scott and also at the Vane Tempest Club as I often go there when I'm home. My family comes from the Harbour, my Grandad and Nanna (on my Mum's side), were known at Vane Tempest Pit and at the Amateur Dramatics Society, respectively. I used to live with them du ring the sixties in Fox Street, Dawdon. They were known as Micky and Grace Cahill. Unfortunately, Grace died last year but had a great send off at St. Mary Magdalene's Church. My parents are Jim and Sheila Scott of Dene House Road and are frequently to b e spotted in Vane Tempest Club on Sunday afternoons, HA!! My name is Colin; I work and live in San Pedro near Marbella and Puerto Banus. If you know this area of the Costa del Sol, I'll say no more! It's definitely loads better than Benidorm, lads! The weather is great most of the year; last Monday it was 32 deg rees Celcius! Really. The ex-pats down here get a lot more out of life than they could in the UK. However, you never forget where you were born, in my case Peterlee Maternity Hospital, 1960. The life-style here in Southern Spain takes a lot of adjustment but the rewards make it worthwhile. Things are cheap, fags about £1.50, wine £0.50 and beer £1.50 max. We have fantastic beaches with a spectacular mountain backdrop; on clear days I can wa tch the winter sunset over Gibraltar and North Africa. Once you've survived here for more than two years, people say that you'll never leave. I'm not ready to leave just yet! This is truly an International Society, you could be in a local bar and there may be 5 or 6 languages being spoken at the same time, many people fluent in 3 or more languages. I just wish more of the ex-pats would get off their arses and learn a little Spanish. Being concentrated in 'Little England' neighbourhoods they will never experience the culture and Spanish communities. Anyway, say hello to the lads down at the Cuddy, just leave a message for Cliff that Colin Scott the Science Teacher says life is still great down here. My Mum and Dad already know!!

Hi, My Great Grandfather Nicholas Meek and his son my Grandfather Nicholas William Meek both lived in Seaham until about 1890s. I am trying to trace the MEEK family history and would welcome any information about the family in and around Seaham. The family worked at the Seaham Iron Works during the 1870s and were also seamen using the port at West Hartlepool. My grandfather left the North East to come down to London to work at the now disused Battersea Power Station as a Crane Driver. Are there any Meeks still living in Seaham? Regards Neil MEEK

Hello, Seaham folk again. I now have a picture of the pier in a storm as my PC "wallpaper"! Wondering if any people I knew in Seaham, at Dawdon Infants and Juniors are out there: Janice Boult, David Gallagher, Beverley Walker, Allison Bleasdale, Ian Cook, who else? It's good to check back and see who is signing in to the guestbook. Bye for now. By the way my father is Jack carrick - who worked at Dawdon Colliery for 2o-something years until 1986 or so. My mother is Margaret Carrick - art teacher at various secondary school and finally Seaham Comp.

I used to visit Seaham from my home in Sunderland when I was a child, staying with relatives Mary and Bob Watt, of Nelson Street, and Hannah and Ned Summerbell, of Stanley Street. Does anyone recall them? Both uncles worked at Vane Tempest, and I belie ve Uncle Bob was a local 'turn' on the local stage. I remember he told me he was a comic, and I thought he meant like the Beano! Well, I was only seven. The only other name I remember from that time, the fifties, was Sadie Beer, whose brothers played cric ket for Seaham. I live far from the North East now, but still visit family regularly. Great Website!

Hello.I am trying to trace my roots as far as I can. If anyone has any information I would be very grateful. My grandmother was Alice Lawrence and she married William Rhodes who, I believe, was a miner at Easington Colliery. They lived in Horden. My great grandmother, ? Lawrence, died on the day of my birth - 10/3/53. I know my great grandmother had two daughters - Alice and Annie and a number of sons who apparently all died. Some of these during WW1. I am keen to find any information about my family and would appreciate an email. Steve McCafferty

I heard a lot about Seaham Harbour when I was growing up in Nottingham, England. My mother Ann Garrity was born in Seaham and grandfather Tom Garrity was deeply involved in the miner's union in the early 1900's. He was also a founding member of Seaham' s Working Men's Club. I plan to visit Seaham on my next visit to England and Ireland in July 2000.
