To Charlton re.Epson Stylus 760. I also have suffered from this. What you have do do is ignore the dire warning in the book about not moving the cartridges manually (I have done this several times and nothing terrible has happened). Move them to the left - they may be a bit reluctant - and then replace BOTH cartridges. The reason for this is that, as you may have found, once you have moved them the system assumes that both are new and will show them full on the printing box. Hope you find this of use. Tony

You can easily see that this site isn't edited !!! Being born in Seaham and living there for many years I often revisit - virtually as well as reality - and this time I found my name ... not in vain, but in seeking contact. It is a very useful site for this .... in fact I shall try myself .... could anyone put me in contact with Jean Marwood as she used to be ...... married a Frank but can't remember his surname??? As for Seaham, I was there last year and when anyone asked me what I found had changed all I could say was how pretty it had become. I think the Council is really really trying. And let's face it, they didn't have a lot to start with !! Seaham is clean, mostly tidy and just waiting to be discovered by the dreaded tourist and the not so dreaded tourist doller (currency). As for the docks I have to agree with the comments - it's a crying shame they are closed off to the public when you see places like Whitby - Seaham could have a thriving touri! st industry with what you have already and some decent accommodation. I know about Seaham Hall being converted but what else is available to stay at? You can't attract the day tourist but you could get people staying there.... Seaham is much more of a tourist attraction that say Sunderland or Hartlepool. Where have all the people from Seaham gone? They left like me and most of my family ..... but we still return even if it's only for sentimental reasons. I still have family in Seaham, so feel that all is not lost. Keep up the good work - and we might come back to retire. The one bad thing I found on my last trip was the amount of vandalism and crime in the town .... that is something you need to address. Cheers everyone ...... Maureen

Segs all the way, there was nothing quite like sliding to school on your segs making nice sparks for all of 2 days before they became quite blunt. Originaly we used to get them from Wooly's and the shoe shop past Valente's (nice toasties if you forgot about the fag-ash). Can anyone remember the name of the sports shop that used to be below Charlie Bond's over-priced emporium? We all used to get out footy stud's from there. Footy FANTASTIC!

I remember the time where I could buy a packet of crisps for 5p then they went up to 10p then to 12p. I also remember where we could buy those 3pence lucky bags at Mary and Dave Smith's shop at the corner of Fredrick street. I also remember where I could spend my 50 pence pocket money on a Saturday morning at a store called Maratties (sp!) The best snack food I can remember (Of course I always have enjoyed food!) was those cornbeef toasties at a shop called Valenties in church street. I remember too the movies somewhere at the bottom of near church street - A movie I remember was "The Last Snows Of Spring" A tear jerker! Oh, I also remember a store called "Dogherts" I think it also sold children's games and other toys and stuff. Well I am sure I will take another trip to memory lane later... Take care all.

"Inspector Harry" You brought back a few memories to me, every now and then I often think I would really enjoy a nice "chip butty" with lots of ketchup and salt and vinegar. I did buy the other day some Heinz baked beans and Heinz Tomato soup from the British store and I really enjoyed the baked beans on toast! Not had that in years!!! Anyway, hope all is well for the Seaham gals and guys. Take care and God Bless.

Lets face it, Seaham has got less now than it had 20 years ago. In fact if you look at old photo's of Seaham it looked quite plesant. Now here we are in the year 2002 and the place is a bigger dump now than it was in the 1930's! Shat on by councillors who do not care just so long as their whisky glass is full. Surrounded by people that moan but do nothing except sit in an armchair watching Brookside night after bloody night. This place has gone to the dogs. Will the last person to leave Seaham please turn off the light. R.I.P

Hello, Came to this site with the hopes of finding some info on my granfather(Adam Robinson) and great grandfather(William Robinson) Adam was born 1895 at Seaham Harbour and William was born ? at Hetton Le Hole. William moved to Carbonado, Iowa in the late 1800's married Mary Ann Spurr and shortly there after returned to Seaham where Adam was born. Adam (like William)worked in the mines at Seaham Colliery for a time. The family moved to Coalhurst, Alberta Canada early 1900's If anyone has any info or ideas where i could locate birth records for Seaham Harbour and Hetton Le Hole it would be appricated Thanx dr604@hotmail.com

I really do give up now.How unfortunate that any sort of discussion, whether you think im a twat or not (allstar, miss joanne),about the state, both present, and future,of your town should be an opportunity for a piss take,a bit of a laugh, thats pretty sad.Id just like to say hi to the three people who took things slightly more seriously and sent me an email.I have sent them details of projects i have been involved in previously, how to form and run community action groups, sources of community project funding, enterprise trusts etc etc.The list is endless for those who are willing to stand up be counted, and get really involved.I look forward to hearing from you and wish you every success.

Its very easy for folks to say, stop knocking Seaham, but lets be honest what on earth have we got to offer the people who live here, never mind the residents of the 500 dolls house which will be crammed onto the former Vane Tempest site? Dont we have a population of similar size to Peterlee, and yet what sort of shops and facilities can we offer?absolutely none. To reach the Harbour from Princess Road you have to go via the crossings and risk life and limb with heavy goods vehicles and oil slicks and virtually non-existent paths, thats before you reach Marlborough which is awash with vomit and dog excrement. And to arrive by bus is a real treat, arriving at the stinking, unsafe bus station, wow isnt it a shame we didnt get the chance to waste millions of ratepayers money turning the police station into a heritage centre?? Why cant we bulldoze the precinct and start afresh, lets be honest, which big name retailer would really want to come to Seaham? Its currently a big dirty blot on the landscape, yes the prom was an improvement and so were the new toilets, but we need decent shops, a clean environment and councillors who live on this planet, which reminds me, and i am being sincere here, what benefit has having a Town Council brought us? It shouldnt need residents to be continually harping on to get places maintained and cleaned up, surely the councillors who represent us actually live in Seaham, dont they see the squalor that we live in? and what about the council employees from Easington District who all appear to have an orange and white vehicle, dont they see fly-tipping etc as they travel about? Thank goodness for the refuse collectors because otherwise id think my council tax was totally wasted. I can remember when we had Seaham Urban District Council, now small was beautiful then, not perfect, but god it was better. Does anyone from local government ever read this guestbook, because if they dont then it would be a jolly good place start to make Seaham a place that people want to live, work and bring up a family.

This all makes me very sad! I attended Northlea School from '63 to '70. Val Roberts, were we at school together? I have so many fond memories af grandad coming home from Dawdon Pit with a black face and yet more bruises but still having time to take me to "the park". Used to wait at the gate of their home on The Avenue looking for the bus stopping at Nicholson's the bakers and seeing his cheery face and a couple of fresh crabs in his hand. I haven't been back to the town for a long time. Is it really so bad now? I'd love to hear from anyone who went to Northlea at about the same time as I. Friends reunited has thrown up a couple of names from the past but its the people who still live in the place who interest me.

I was present at the Public Meeting on Thursday night at Vane Tempest. I dont think much was gained by it but I learned a couple of things. - If you add a room or insert a sky light into your own home the coucil have to know about it and has to pass the plans, but if a company are spending £18.5 the coucil dont have a clue as to what the plans are and further more are not able to tell people where the premises are going to be moved to. Secondly we have a Town Council which has 21 representatives yet only seven of them bothered to turn out for the meeting. Maybe the fact that refreshments afterwards have to be paid for put them off. The residents are having more than wool pulled over their eyes. V Roberts Seaham

oh dear!!I once had high hopes for the people of seaham, one or two had shown promise in relation to having at least a slight grasp on the social and economic pressures that would drive a town such as seaham. Then to my astonishment joanne says the dock co should employ everyone because of the space they take up,and allstar says the world economy is in recession!Applying joannes faulted logic to the real world would mean that the duchy of cornwall should employ everyone in the uk,and also a large chunk of mainland europe!!and if you took the time to read about your subject matter you would see that projected growth figures for G7 members although in the region of 2-3 % are still positive, with 3% plus growth in 2003.Japan is still expected to be the major brake on the growth of the world economy.Growth however needs investment, investment requires strategy, planning, and most of all confidence, something that will be sadly lacking in relation to the area of seaham for some time to come.

Cibup, out of kindness I will ignore the numerous grammatical errors in your message (the sign of a failed apprenticeship?). Times are hard everywhere at the moment, we are in the midst of a global recession and a lot of people are losing their jobs. I thought the main beef with the Dock Co. was over public access to the pier - not the quality of sunshine in Ropery or the fact that (shock-horror) the folks who run the docks are subject to the same financial pressures as the rest of the world...

Hello to Parkside allstar who probably will not ever shine very brightly, the docks did employ around 60 but about 6 weeks ago they paid 4 apprentices of 1 month short of them finnishing their training, how long is an apprentiship, 2 to 5 year maybe. Tell these ex apprentices who gave their time to the dock co to better them selves that the dock company owners are good. Or maybe not as bright as Parkside Allstar

Joanne, The Dock Co. has a single purpose - to make a profit. It has no responsiblities to the local community - that is the job of the council. I'm not sure what the turn out for the last local election was, but I bet you it was less then 25% of the town's population. The current situation is born out of the apathy of the town's folk towards civic matters.

To Parkside Allstar: yes, the pits provided jobs but then Seaham was a mining community?!?! OK, so the Dock Company provide jobs too but exactly how many??? I often hear the figure of 70 employees quoted! Now, I won't claim to know the exact figure they employ but, surely, for a company who take up so much space and have so much influence on Seaham......they should really employ the whole population of the town!!!
Joanne Curtis <gingejozee@hotmail.com>
Seaham, - Friday, February 01, 2002 at 13:27:45 (PST)
Who cares if the sun shines a little less brightly in Ropery Walk? at least the docks employ people. When we had three pits, they hardly enhanced the beauty of the area, but it didn't matter because they provided work for the town. Let's not drive out one of the few employers willing to do business in the area over something as trivial as quality of sunshine in Ropery! or the rights of the smelly few to catch fish from the pier..

Just a note for Steve Smith of naples about the DOCK CO and EASINGTON DISTRICT COUNCIL. Alas I am unable to tell you a fair story of what's happening in Seaham as the Dock Co and Easington District Council will not speak to no one but each other on the issue apart from telling the people of Seaham that they will close or fence of parts of this town. I live close to what some person in the local press called "Stalag 19" also know as Seaham Dock Co. These giant warehouses with a fence of 12 foot then another fence of 18 foot over looking Ropery Walk Infants School and the remaining 20% of the Bottle Works Field. I have heard reports that sun rise is 3 quarters of an hour later in the Ropery area than in any other part of Seaham. The anglers of Seaham have stirred up a hornets nest but who can blame them, they are now fighting to regain access to the piers for them selves and to open up the dock area for the public so that the old bloke with his dog to the family sitting in the sun on the slope can once again enjoy our historic port. As for the Dock co and Easington District Council, we know they are listening but its only so they can find an opening to dodge another question

Dont forget the public meeting at the Vane Tempest Welfare on Thursday 31st Jan. Its not just anglers losing out its everyone who has set foot in Seaham at any time be he local or be he a tourist. The history of Seaham both recent and prehistoric is all around the hole of Seaham Docks. Seaham Town Council is giving us all a chance to have our say and it might be a chance to put Easington District Council "who are avoiding the issue like the plague" on the spot. Durham County Council may also have officials at the meeting. Get your self along and lets fight together to restore our rights and regain our heritage

Beardy, I agree that Mad Max may have gone over the top a bit, but stating that the 'vast majority of people in Seaham are OK' is a wee bit of an exaggeration. The young people who can't escape to other areas have little chance of getting a decent job, whilst the elderly live in fear of drug-related crime. Most men over 40 are unemployed miners, who really would rather not be playing darts all day. If you walk down Church Street, it tells its own story - cheap and nasty shops, selling dinted tins and broken biscuits..

Matthew in Oz. Thanks for visiting our Guest Book, and for giving us some interesting background into your town in Oz. Your entry deserves a better response than that from Mad Max. If you stay with us long enough you will discover that he/her/it and friends have nothing positive to say on any subject and unlike you, they never reveal their true identity. If by some unfortunate set of circumstances they had immigrated to Oz, you would have justifiably labelled them ‘Whinging Poms’. I hope your visit to this guest book proves to be worthwhile. Well done Matthew. Don’t give up, the vast majority of people in Seaham are OK.

THE DIARY OF DECKA DOLE : Part One - The Story of a Parasite. I remember with great fondness the proudest day of my life, as my Father with fag in hand led me to More Store to be fitted out for my track suit. “This is it!” I thought, all my hard work at school playing the nick was over. I could now settle down to a good fifty years scrounging off the state. Once fitted out in my new track suit, it was off round the Nash to beg for Giros. I glanced round the room at familiar faces...druggies, car thieves, burglars, compulsive gamblers & alcoholics. Yes, all my family were there. Now the Government, in a vain attempt to cut down on the massive amounts of money paid to scum like me, have made the form filling in a bit of a nightmare. But I just sat puffing on my fag and told them I could not write and some poor cow had to fill it in for me. With Part One of my Parasite Plan in action, I could now look round for a suitable mate....some gullible little scrubber I could knock up every 10 months so by the time she was twenty we would have six kids. The council would give us a big house, a car and everything and just think of the tab money in child benefit we would get! I love this Country. More of Decka Dole’s memoirs next week.

That just leaves the people of seaham you'll find they are mostly over wieght fat lazy no good idiots who will always say there's nothing wrong with our town, if you dont like it,move. seaham is the gutter of east durham.your'e not allowed to do anything go anywhere or see anything. the local council makes sure of that.

Hi, My name is Matthew and i live in Seaham, AUSTRALIA! Our town is much smaller than yours and we live on a river and are about 20 minutes from NEWCASTLE, Australia and 2 and a half hours from Sydney. Our town is small since we were destroyed in a large bushfire in 1939. Only our hall, 2 churches and a historic house and our Store was saved. We lost a post office, many houses, Two being historic, a number of shops, our presbyterian church and many of our streets were destroyed. Today many houses have been re-built and our town is rapidly growing. This year our hall celebrates it's 100th birthday aswell as our chuch and our school turns 150. I would really like to hear from someone over in Seaham, England. For more info on Seaham down under go to: www.seaham-p-schools.nsw.edu.au Regards, Matthew

: Just discovered info about Seaham Harbour on the internet. I was born in Ropery Walk, Seham harbour in 1941. I attended Ropery Walk school (my name then was Roberts), and later Seaham Harbour Girls' Grammar School from 1952 to 1957, and would like to hear from any "old girls" from that era. Our headmistress was Miss Hudson, who always wore a long black gown! We used to have our speech days at the Theatre Royal. My Dad was a miner at Vane Tempest colliery and I remember him coming home with a coal black face before the pit head baths were built. Those were the days!

After spending 20 years in Oz, I still have many fond childhood memories of Seaham, in particular fishing with my mates on the pier. I am therefore appalled to hear about the closure of the docks area to the local fishermen. This simply wouldn't happen here in Bunbury. We would make a stand and stick to our guns until we won. What has happened to the people in Seaham? have you all lost your spines? I reckon it's about time you got off your backsides and sorted these blokes out, with some good old fashioned people power. You could do with a bit Aussie diplomacy over there if you asked me. For the past 200 years we've had to put up with every Tom, Dick and Aborigine laying claim to our land, but we've had none of it and they've eventually buggered off. Apart from the ones we let stay to do the cleaning. So come on Seahamites, show those mongrels what you are made of and re-claim your pier.

May I first wish everyone in Seaham a very Happy new Year I have noticed some of the comments regarding the "Pubs" in Seham Being a Harbour Lad Born on North Terrace I think you will find the following correct (Im almost 100%) The Duke of Seaham was never the Duke of Seaham. Seaham didnt have a Duke in the history book But was the Duke of Wellington also known as the "The Duke" an old watering hole of mine", Sylvias was for a short while The Prince of Wales names after a brief vist by HRH to the Scouts accross the road, its prior name was The Londonderry Arms or "The Derry" The habour view was formally "The Lord Seaham" and behind it was the "Lord Byron" where you could get six records for six pence. I hope this clears up a few things to those interested in the pubs of Seaham. Kind Regards to you all Brian Porteous

: Remember the old saying " You are what you eat." Well that saying has come to haunt the people of Seaham BIG STYLE!! The strange pong that has been floating around Seaham over the last few days has been tracked down to a new fertiliser that local farmers have been spreading on the fields. This fertiliser is made of sewerage compressed into pellets. In others words....... HUMAN PAP! Yes folks your poo is getting spread all over Seaham! : I was just "home" for Christmas 2001, the first winter in England for 31 years. And, I got to see snow again. Now I know why I usually go over to visit in the summer. I was born in Dawdon 1942 and left in 1965 to Toronto, Canada (9 years), then New Orleans, Louisiana (4 years) and the rest in the Houston, Texas, area, where I still reside. However, my mother, Elsie Thompson, now lives at 38 Bethune Avenue, Deneside, Seaham, and is 82 years. My father, Albert Thompson, deceased, was an official at Dawdon Colliery, a Major in the Army Cadets, on the Cricket Team, and then Master of the Masonic Lodge. Our family is scattered all over the world, but I try to come home now every year to visit Mom for my two weeks vacation. I have collected the "history" books of Seaham as they have been published, but do not have the new one, "Old Seaham". But my sister (who lives in Cyprus)has the book and that is where I saw your website address. It is terrific. The photographs ! bring back many memories. I swam in Dawdon Pit Pond, both on the swim teams against Shotts, Scotland, and on the Dawdon Ladies Rhythmic Swim Team. In fact, my photograph was in the very first book published. Also, my father's photograph was in the section on the Lifeboat Disaster. I could go on, and on, but I am grateful for the good work you are doing. My grown children can appreciate that this little place has more to it than meets the eye. Thank you. Ann Erickson.

Dear Sea Anemone. Did you have a nice Christmas? I waited for your card but I think it must have got lost in the post. I'm sorry about those socks. I didn't know what to get you and it wasn't till after I sent them I realised that anemones don't have legs. You can easy take them back, they have some very pretty gastropod mittens. Happy new year.

I wonder if anyone can help me. I visited Seaham today and noticed one of your public houses is called The Duke of Seaham. Well I've scoured the history books and I cannot find any mention of him. Has anyone got any information on this illusive character.

To all the Seaham Harbourites and website visitors belated Christmas wishes and all the best for the New Year , but to all the Seaham people who are being blasted by the Dock Company , although I left over 40 years ago , can I offer some advice ? In Australia people power is a potent force which has overturned many government and corporate decisions , so ,get together ,if it's worth fighting for , get stuck in and give them hell , they can't take pressure , believe me ,the more you give the less they can take , but be prepared to keep it up . Yes we can all remember when there were Pits in the N.E. but a certain Lady called Maggie changed all that! she decided to "take on" the Miners and their Leader a certain Arthur (forget his second name) and whopped them out of sight, which was a sad thing really because the Miners in the N.E. were a great set of Men, but they were let down by their Union Leaders, Great Men, the Miners were, but lead by Donkey's

This green and pleasant land...... If only the council could have seen past the dock company's greed, how different things could have been. This town had so much to offer. People from all over the country visit Seahouses, Craster and Whitby and the history of Seaham puts all of them in the shade. Once upon a time when you could visit the harbour, it was far superior than anything the aforementioned towns had to offer. Seaham is almost unique in maritime & English history. Let us look at the facts............1. Seaham Harbour is a port without a river. 2. Seaham Harbour was built by an entrepreneur in order to transport his coal to the rest of the world thus undercutting the costly practice of sending it via Sunderland, Newcastle, Hartlepool etc, etc. 3. Seaham Hall was the marriage venue of one of England's greatest romantic poets, Lord Byron. People from all over the world still want to know and visit the places this man had any connection with. 4. Saint Mary the Virgin Anglo-Saxon church is one of the finest and oldest churches in the entire country. This town could have competed with the best of them in the tourist market but instead the council have seen fit to turn us into an industrial estate and this will be our greatest shame.
