This is for Andrea Henderson. Mary A Sowerby married Hector McAllister in 1932. William Hector McAllister was born in 1934, died in 1998 in Sunderland District. Your father was born in 1937 as Robert W McAllister and as you already know, his mother Mary A McAllister died in 1937 aged 31 years. From records it looks as though Hector McAllister may have been born on 10th July 1900 and died in 1973 in Sunderland District. It seems possible that Hector never married after the death of Mary

.From 1948-1951.Four Seaham schoolboy goalkeepers played for Sunderland Boys.Doughie Weathrall,Frank Reed, myself & Jimmy Dyson. At that time Sunderland was in Co.Durham.the area for selection was Horden to Sunderland, yet only Seaham provided these 'goalies' quite an achievement.

My grandmother Elizabeth Fox who was a widow had a daughter on 24 July 1920, the father was called Angus Watson whos family were totally against them getting married. As far as I know my mother was born or lived in Dawdon and eventually my grandmother married William Johnstone and they ended their days together in Ashington, Northumberland. I am writing this in the hope that someone may know of Angus Watson and could give me any information. It would fill in some missing pieces in my family tree.

It's nice to start a message with 'Hello Dolly'! 1917 is a bit earlier than my time but I had relatives in Seaham then. My great grandmother lived in the 'Irish back street' area between Church street and the railway. A generation later my grandmother lived in Tyne street - almost the same spot. I was born in Tyne St in '56 and I remember our little world was very small. Going around the back to Wear St was an adventure! Pre school every day was spent on the beach.(And it was always sunny...) My grandfather Jocker Smith was a publican, he had The Oddfellows in Church St. My uncle Leo had it after him. My father Gerry then had the Vane Arms for a while. Do you ever get back to Seaham?

Hello Mick Smith, I was born in 1917 in a long street of tenement houses. There were three tenants to one house, no kitchen or bathroom, cooking was done on the fire and oven at the side. Friday night was bath night in a tin bath in front of the fire. All of my relatives lived in the same street and people were very friendly in those days. we played out side nearly all the time an sometimes had a skipping rope from one side of the street to the other, everyone joined in. We spent a lot of time on the beach, boys used to collect wood and light a fire to boil winkles in rusty old tins for us to eat, we picked the winkles off the rocks. We picked them out with a pin and ate them (no eco-li ). The highlight of the year was the ‘Seaham Hall’ flower show, the miners took the veg and flowers grown in their allotments. They were judged for the biggest. There was a fair ground and entertainment. The beach was crowded in the summer holidays we were there from morning until night. There were lots more characters in ‘Seaham’ i have a poem about them but it is too long to send on here. What is your connection to ‘Seaham’?

To Anne Stavrou, I went to Deneside school, and I was also in Mr Braddocks class, in the prefab. The prefabs are no longer there now but the swimming pool is still there, and it is the only school to have a swimming pool, all the other junior schools in Seaham use it for swimming lessons. I live on The Avenue and there is only a fence separating my back garden from the school. I was called Elizabeth Stoker before I was married.

Church Lads Brigade - happy days - I was a recruit in the late 50's early 60's. The only camp I managed to go to was at Filey. It was a grand week away with the open latrines, and only spoilt by ending up in 18 inches of mud after running over the thin layer of golden sand as we ran down to the sea. We were called Dirty Dawdon after coming first in drill presentation but last in uniform turnout. That was all before I discovered the pleasure of alcohol. Regards Tom

My heritage began in Seaham Harbour & I am keen to know if my family are remembered at all. My Grand Mother Ethel Richards married Albinus Cook. They had 2 daughters, Elsie & Edna. I have Edna's dictionary. It is stamped with Council Boys' School Seaham Harbour / County Durham Education Committee. My aunt Edna died when she was 16 and I never met her. I want to know who she was. I also have her handmade needle case and am a needlewoman myself. I think I reminded my Grand Mother of her lost daughter - makes me fell special - like she came back in me. My Mother married Joseph Stafford from Consett, Co. Durham.

My late Father's family were born & bread in Seaham Harbour, Parkside - and I have always refered to Seham as being 'home'. My late Granfather was a miner (Dawdon I recall)and I am proud to be associated as an 'offspring' of Seaham Harbour. We are re-visiting again this September (I try to visit the cemetry at least every 2 years - sometimes yearly)and am looking forward to seeing the areas that I remember as a child and those that have been re-modeled & regenerated and hope that some of the 'olde' feel is still present. Good wishes to all Seaham people. If anyone remembers the 'Wright' family of Parkside (Derwent Close?) Florrie, John, John (Jack), Jimmy,Derek, Edward, Florrie & Marrion I would be pleased to acknowledge any correspondence. Best regards to all Paul.

comments: Jupiter. Message for Mary nee Hogg. We were in the sixth form together. Yes, I remember St. John's Youth Club and after-church works along the prom. I had my first cappacino there. We were also founder-members of Seaham Young Conservatives with Alma Lee, Michael Westgarth-Taylor, Anne Gilmore and Eddie Franklin. What days! I'm surprised that we had time for school! Love to hear from you again, Mary. You were a great chum. Avril Lumley Prior

This is a message for Mary Cook, nee Hogg. We were in the upper and Lower Sixth together and helped to found Seaham Young Conservatives with Eddy Franklyn, Michael Westgarth-Taylor, Alma Lee and Ann Gilmore. Also remember St. John's Youth Club and the walks along the prom and my very first taste of capaccino. I'm living in Peterborough now and gave up teaching to write and conduct historical research. I'd love to hear from you again and Joan Cairns, Brenda, Judith and the others in our crowd. Avril Lumley Prior

I am originally from Seaham (parkside)and all of my Mams side of the family are, Reekie,Marren,Atkinson,My Great Aunt Kitty Atkinson and Den Marren still living in Seaham. I remember as a small child my nana (Lilly Reekie) used to tell me ghost stories about the Hall hospital, The Ghost minor whos rides in the back of your car when you go along the cliff road through the tunnel. But the one story that stands out and I cant find any history of this is Blast Marth & Loppy Dick, who apparently lived on the blast in the caves and knocked on locals doors in Seaham asking for food. My Nana said when she was a small girl, parents used to tell naughty children that Blast Martha would take them away, she even recalled a time when she was small and Blast Marth came to her house ( not sure if true). Could anyone shed any light on this grusome twosome or is it just an urban myth. Thanks Jo

Seaham Harbour is my birthplace, (24/08/1938) my father was already in the Army so my mother went to Seaham where her mother now resided with her second husband (Wilson) who I believe worked at Dawdon Colliery. After I was born, my mother returned to our home in Surbiton Surrey. I know that we returned during the war because I remember watching with my Grandfather(Wilson)through field glasses the North sea convoys passing off the coast, no doubt on their way to Russia. I intend to visit later this year to see if I can find any reference to my Grandfather

To Julie Allen - In my research for my book on Seaham during WW2 I came across an item which said that in March, 1945, a naval gunner from County Antrim had been on an all day drinking spree with his shipmate in Seaham after being paid. Making their way back to their ship in the evening blackout, the gunner fell into the dock and was drowned. His body was recovered some time later. I would think there will be burial records for March, 1945 in Durham Records at County Hall where the name of this seaman from Antrim might be found. p.s. Hello Robin Thomas Tasker. To the best of my knowledge your father, Tommy Tasker, died in traffic accident. He was driving a lorry/waggon from or to Hawthorn Quarry near Seaham when it was involved in a collision with a double-decker bus. My friend, who lives in Seaton and served in the army with your dad in Norfolk, gave me the information. This same friend of mine was at your mom and dad's wedding reception in a pub Sherringham. I beleive your mother's maiden name was Maggie West. I also knew your dad and grew up with him in Seaham. Sorry to be the bearer of sad news. Hi, I am trying to find out some information about my nanas father - my g-grandfather. My nana was Nancy (Annie) Harvey born in March 1919 at Back South Railway Street in Seaham. Her mother was Elizabeth Harvey (later Lowery) but her father who is a complete mystery supposedly died before she was born. The story my nana was told by her mum is that he was a sailor who fell off the gang plank and drowned going back to his ship one night drunk. I know that pregnancy outside of marriage was a huge taboo back then and as such there is a possibility that this was just a story made up by the family, however if this story rings any bells for anyone I would be extremely grateful to hear from you.

My Great-Great Grandfather, (Robert Murtagh) is believed to have been born in Ireland in 1810. His son (John Murtagh) was born in England on April 4, 1854. He married Julia Linskey at Mary Maedeleno Church on March 2, 1878. They had the first of six children, a son(John R. Murtagh) who was born at 47 Seaham Harbor on Sept. 15, 1979. The first of the the Murtagh (Linskey) family emigrated from Liverpool on the SS Erin and arrived in the United States on May 30, 1981. My mother corresponded with family in Seaham during 1950's and 1960's but our family lost touch after that. We would like to reconnect with the Murtagh family.

Hi, I just came upon your sight and wondered if you could help me. I am doing family research on the name of MEADE. I am trying to obtain information on a relative who was a captain of a ship. It was either wrecked or missing at sea. The Captains last name was Meade, I believe he had is son with him and he also drowned. I believe this was sometime after the second world war, so I know it is some time ago. I was told that the local newspaper at the time helped to obtain quite a bit of money for the widow and children. Captain Meade and his family lived in Seaham. His first name may have been John, I really do not know for sure. I am just assuming this as his father?s name was John. Would you have any idea at all what newspaper would have been in print at that time? I completely understand if this is not something you can help me with. I live in Palm Springs California so I cannot do these things in person. Thank you for any assistance.

Re. message in Nov.from Pat Murphy( Spud) (Mop). I was in same class at St.Cuthbert's and then St.Joseph's schools. Remember well when you brought your Dad's medals in to school Pat (boy were you/we in trouble). Last time I heard JP Swann was in Wolverhampton and Jimmy Swann who had played football for Sunderland Catholic Boys was still in Seaham.

for Jane Charleton. Not too many pictures of the harbour around but there are photographs in the book 'Changing Face of Seaham 1928 - 1992', but they are all black and white. This used to be on sale in the library. I have a copy and could scan a few pages for you. Alternatively why don't you try taking a copy image of the coloured photo at the top of this guestbook. Just do a right hand click on your mouse and select 'save image as', you will then be able to save the photo to your pc and print the image at your leisure. Richard Thorpe

Does anyone remember the Atkinson family that lived on The Avenue in the early 50's? I think he was a bookie. My family raced greyhounds at Easington dog track.

I was born in Seaham in 1954 and my maiden name is Doughty - daughter of Alma and Fred, now sadly no longer with us.I married my husband Steve in 1978 and moved to Gloucestershire. What I would love to know is what happened to the red mine collection box that used to be on the sea front? I'm hoping that someone will know. We often visit Seaham to see my Father in Law and I have often wondered what happened to it. I would also like to say hello to anyone who remembers me.

I think the work that has been carried out is excellent except for the "art work". It is awfull. In Australia we would ask "whose relative was given the commission".It is tasteless and doesn't reflect the heratige of the area at all. I grew up in Seaham and have always been proud of my mining background that pile of steel / flat rock does not represent any thing other than a pile of metal and a lump of rock The town looks great
